BODY & SPIRIT MASSAGE’S NEW BRAND RECEIVES A PERSONAL TOUCH FROM ROSKELLY INC.

Kristin Eggeman discovered Roskelly Inc. by chance; she was driving by the new Boss Man Burgers (a completely Roskelly-created brand, name, and logo) in Portsmouth, RI, and was immediately drawn to the restaurant’s image. She contacted one of the Boss Man business partners – a friend of hers – and asked, “Can you tell me who did your logo?” Kristin had been working with designers for over six months, trying to create a new logo and promotional materials for her Aquidneck Island-based business: Body & Spirit Massage. So far, not one of the other designers she’d worked with had been able to commit to finishing a design to her satisfaction.
Kristin set up an initial meeting with Tom Roskelly, Creative Director of Roskelly Inc. Her meetings with the other designers did not prepare her for how this first meeting with Tom would play out.
Prior to the meeting, Roskelly asked Eggeman to create a posterboard collage of the types of images she felt best represented or captured the feel of her business’s identity. He also took a look at her current marketing materials, which included a website created for her by a previous designer – the color scheme it used was blue-based. After speaking with Kristin for a bit, Roskelly noted, “When I listen to you describe your business, I hear you talk about things like warmth, comfort, a feeling of welcoming. You drive a red truck. You clearly like reds and other warmer colors. Blue is a color that feels cold and unapproachable – if you are running a massage therapy practice, is that the type of message you want to be sending to potential customers?”

“Tom sat down with me for two hours, and I left his office practically in tears!” says Kristin, adding, “But good tears! Very cathartic. Tom connected with my ideas and goals on a personal level that I hadn’t been able to find before. He listened to me; he got it – and that is what I wanted to find in a designer!”
“Every client is different,” says Roskelly, “but with each one, I have always taken the approach of trying to get inside the client’s head and see the company through their eyes, and then to create a brand which they feel truly captures the business’s identity,” says Roskelly. “In a field like Kristin’s, what she selling is far more personal than your typical business, so her logo really needs to reflect who she is. I wanted her to feel like she was involved in creating the new design from start to finish. It was a very organic process. The goal was to, through the logo itself, evoke an emotion of what Kristin’s massage would feel like.”

Eggeman’s collage included several images of peaceful Buddha faces, and she indicated to Roskelly that she really wanted to have a Buddha face in her logo. Tom used the photographs as inspiration to draw a new image: a Buddha with a warm, welcoming face with the hint of a smile, yet who also appears tranquil and relaxed. The colors he used were a deep auburn with lines in gold – colors on the warmer end of the spectrum. He then tried out different fonts and effects for the lettering of “Body & Spirit Massage,” but Kristin ultimately opted for one smooth, flowing font throughout. “The overall effect I was going for was ‘simple,’” she says.

The new logo will be used in all marketing materials: from her business cards, letterhead, gift certificates and announcement cards, to signage, clothing, and more. Massage therapy practices usually grow through word of mouth, Eggeman shared, but she had reached the point in her business’s growth that she wanted to “take it to the next level,” which is why she decided to re-brand. The other reason for the new logo is the business’s new location near the Green Grocer in Portsmouth.
