‘Branding’ and ‘nonprofit’ are two words that might not immediately seem relevant to each other, but a striking, memorable logo and a strong brand are just as important to the success of a nonprofit organization as they are to a for-profit company – especially in an economic downturn where many nonprofits are finding it tough to even stay afloat. Roskelly Inc. not only recognizes the importance of branding for nonprofits, they also intimately understand the detailed process required in crafting the right design. This level of expertise is the reason why design experts Peleg Top and Jonathan Cleveland chose to include Roskelly’s logo in their new book which was created to showcase “the best, brightest, and most successful design campaigns in the nonprofit industry to ever hit the market” and is described as “a one-of-a-kind compendium of nonprofit design.”
The Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter, is the nonprofit organization that supports the Town of Bristol, Rhode Island’s no-kill animal care and adoption center. The shelter’s mission is “to assist in providing a safe environment and emergency veterinary funding for the animals in their care until they find their forever homes.”
The logo design was uniquely tailored to embody the shelter’s vision in more than one sense: not only does it feature the face of a dog, rabbit and cat, showing the shelter’s goal to protect the lives of many different types of animals, but the animals’ eyes are in fact shared, which creates a more literal sense of the “shared vision” of the organization’s members and the surrounding community. The animals’ round faces are soft and approachable, connoting the cyclical/connected nature of life in tandem with the interlocking of their faces. The goal of the logo was to capture the friendly, safe, and happy state that the Bristol Animal Shelter works to provide for its animals and the people who care about them.

The effectiveness and creativity of Roskelly’s logo landed it on the same pages as such highly successful campaigns as the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Give Something Back International, Get London Reading, and the Frameline Film Festival. According to the book’s creators, “It’s not enough for a nonprofit campaign to simply share an important message; successful campaigns must have memorable slogans, inspiring designs, and tailored marketing materials that drive home their purpose—and encourage action—to the widest audience possible.” These were the types of criteria applied when judging the submissions. Roskelly Inc. is thrilled to have its work recognized in such a well-respected and conscientious publication.
The Friends of the Bristol Animal Shelter logo has also won awards in American Graphic Design and Advertising by David E. Carter, as well as an American Graphic Design Award from Graphic Design USA.
